About us
Who We Are
The Sound Between is a New York City-based ensemble dedicated to immersing our audiences in a world of musical storytelling. We believe that music and stories are the connective tissue that binds people together. Our aim is to offer our audiences a new way of experiencing choral music, focusing on the story as much as the music.
OUR MISSION
Storytelling and music are fundamental parts of being human. They create community, foster engagement and collaboration, and connect people from all backgrounds. The Sound Between seeks to flip the expectations of the traditional choral music performance and immerse our audiences in a world of vivid stories.
We ask our artists to bring their full artistic selves to our projects. Their work in diverse artistic worlds fully harnesses their individual lived experience and training as vocalists and actors, allowing us to highlight both narrative and music.
We hope our focus on storytelling through music will encourage fresh faces to join our classical music audiences, create opportunities for commissioning innovative concert-length works, and engage our artists in new and exciting ways.

Matthew Goinz (he/him)
Artistic Director & Founder
Musician and educator Matthew Goinz has performed in venues around the world, created arrangements that have been heard from California to South Korea, and enjoyed collaborations with prominent artists of our day. Based in New York City, Matthew is the Founding Artistic Director and Conductor of The Sound Between, a professional ensemble dedicated to storytelling through choral music. His multi-faceted career - which began at his hometown theater, The Paul Bunyan Playhouse in Bemidji, MN - has brought him to prominent venues in Europe, Asia, South America, and across the United States. He maintains active performing relationships with several professional choral ensembles in New York City and can be heard on a number of Grammy-nominated recordings. From 2014-2018, Matthew was a performing member of and tour manager for the acclaimed tenor/bass ensemble, Cantus. As an arranger, he most recently worked on Mad Gallica’s epic, genre-bending debut EP, “Enter the Vortex.” Matthew holds advanced degrees in conducting and makes his home in West Harlem with his partner in all things, soprano and actor Sophie Amelkin, and Lucy, the sweetest beagle that ever was.
